This is great. I open water swim (but not really cold water) so relate to this. I shall look forward to you book. And to listening to the rest of the chapter snippets. 💙
Thanks so much Jacqui - honestly, the cold water can be quite life changing...now is the time to give it a go as the season changes... I can highly recommend!! x
Fair enough. Like you, (I'm taking this from the book excerpt) I'm a swimmer not a dipper so It is finding somewhere safe to go. I know there is a river near me a group of women go all year but there was some trouble over access last winter so I'll have to see where that ended up.
yes absolutely about finding somewhere safe, and people to go with. The main thing is it's got to be right for you. It's ok to stay in the warm water! The cold is not for everyone. Where are you based? x
I’m in West Yorkshire. I used to do triathlons and swam in 12/14 degrees training for a May event one year. I do it for pleasure now and I don’t regulate my temperature so well since my chemotherapy so I’m quite in my head about getting too cold! I’d like to try again. I breath much better now. First few times I ever swam open water I couldn’t do the breathing our underwater! There are so many things that you learn about yourself through it.
Wonderful! You capture those tiny moments of sudden involvement in the world as it is - the noticing of a tiny thing that grounds us - so well. I can’t wait for the book!
I rescued my 3rd bee in 2 days from the outside water dish that my dog, the crows, blue jays and squirrels use...it's hot here in Portland, Oregon. The bee seems to land for a drink and can't the fly out??? I get the occasional fly out too...love your words.
yaay for rescuing the bees - yes they seem to manage for a short while in the water but I think they can't somehow free their wings from the tension of the water surface? My dad always used to feed them sugar and water if he saw them on the ground and then pop them onto a flower to recover. Thank you for your lovely comment 💕
Wow, I loved this! You described the feeling and sensations so viscerally and beautifully, I was there with you. Thank you for sharing this juiciness. Look forward to more xx

Maybe 🤔. I’m a wet suit girl so it’s a bit step 🥶
I did my first winter in a wet suit…
